Being Canadian

Being Canadian

I am proud to be Canadian but even more so as a parent I am grateful to be Canadian. Raising my kids in a peaceful, democratic country where my children can be kids and enjoy a childhood of exploring the world around them, have an education and healthcare with an abundance of food and clean water is incredible. I mean really all these things should be basic human rights although for much of the planet unfortunately they are not.

But being Canadian is more than that. It’s more than Tim Horton’s and what I believe is taking over our country… Shoppers Drug Mart. It’s more than the “I’m sorry” or “Eh” It’s about getting excited for the first snow fall and wearing shorts on the first +1 degree spring day while still wearing your toque and Sorel’s. For my kids it’s about going up north for the summer to camp and the opportunity to challenge themselves while jumping into an ice cold lake to take their swimming test the first day. Or ironing maple leafs with beautiful fall colours into wax paper. Or my mom, sister and I ran into a wolves while on a walk in Northern Quebec once so we did what any good Canadian would do, we started singing “Oh Canada” loudly and they ran away. Just to be clear that is not a survival tip!

It’s nice to be Canadian when you are traveling and people ask you where you are from it’s always a warm reception. We help each other in ice storms and make fun of each other when we call the Army in to shovel. But it’s more than all that, more than the clichés of beer, hockey and moose. We are strong and we are raising strong smart kids who know they can do better than us, be better humanitarians, better environmentalists, stick up for the underdog. It’s about raising polite kids but not too polite so they learn how to say no to Wars they don’t believe in and yes to causes they do. Being Canadian allows us opportunity! To Love Laugh and Live to the fullest.
